Best Tafsir Books in English: Where to Start with the Qur'an's Explanation

Reading a translation of the Qur'an tells you what a verse says. Tafsir tells you what it means — the context in which it was revealed, how the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and his Companions understood it, and the rulings and lessons the scholars drew from it. Allah did not reveal the Qur'an to be read without understanding; He said, “[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, that they might reflect upon its verses” (Sad 38:29). Tafsir is how that reflection is done correctly.

But not every commentary is equal. The reliable tafsir is the one built on the methodology of the Salaf: it explains the Qur'an first by the Qur'an, then by the authentic Sunnah, then by the statements of the Companions and those who followed them — not by opinion, speculation, or the philosophies of later theology. Start Here: The Two Complete Tafsirs

If you buy one tafsir in your life, it will be one of these two. Both explain the entire Qur'an from al-Fatihah to an-Nas; the difference is who they were written for.

Tafseer as-Sa'di — 10 Volumes — $278

This is the tafsir the scholars most often recommend as a starting point, and for good reason. Shaykh Abdur-Rahman Nasir as-Sa'di — the teacher of Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymeen — made a deliberate choice to write for the reader, not the specialist. He states the correct meaning directly and concisely, grounds it in the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah, and writes with a warmth that speaks to the heart as much as the mind. Tafsir Ibn Kathir — Abridged 10 Volumes — $267

If as-Sa'di is where to start, Ibn Kathir is the standard — the most widely studied and broadly accepted tafsir in the world. Imam Ibn Kathir, a student of Ibn Taymiyyah, applied the classical method rigorously and treated the stories of the prophets carefully, distinguishing what is established from the Isra'iliyyat that folklore later added. This Darussalam edition is the first complete abridged English translation, with weak and fabricated narrations removed. It is more detailed than as-Sa'di and is the reference students return to for life.

Which should you buy? For accessibility and a first read through the whole Qur'an, choose as-Sa'di. For the classical benchmark and a lifelong study reference, choose Ibn Kathir. Many serious readers eventually own both.

On a Budget? Begin with One Juz

You don't have to commit to a full ten-volume set to begin. The most-recited portion of the Qur'an is available on its own:

• Tafsir as-Sa'di — Parts 28, 29 & 30 (Juz Amma and more) — $37. The final three sections of the Qur'an — the surahs you recite most in salah — explained by as-Sa'di. This single volume will transform your prayer.
• Juz Amma — Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Part 30 — $19. Every surah from an-Naba' to an-Nas with Ibn Kathir's commentary. The ideal starting point for a new Muslim or a memorizing child.
• Tafsir Ibn Kathir — Juz Tabaarak, Part 29 — $11. Surah al-Mulk through al-Mursalat, including “the Protector” that intercedes for its reciter.
• Tafsir as-Sa'di — Parts 1, 2 & 3 — $37. Begins at Surah al-Baqarah — Ayat al-Kursi, the last two verses of the surah, and the foundational legislation of the early Madinan Qur'an.

Go Deep on a Single Surah

Some chapters deserve a whole book. These focused commentaries are among the most rewarding reading in the collection:

• The Spiritual Cure: An Explanation of Surah al-Fatihah — $20. You recite al-Fatihah at least seventeen times a day. This comprehensive commentary — drawing on al-Tabari, al-Qurtubi, Ibn Kathir, Ibn al-Qayyim, and as-Sa'di — explains every word, including the hadith qudsi in which Allah divides the surah between Himself and His servant. It will change how you pray.
• Tafsir Surah al-Kahf by Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymeen — $29. The surah recommended every Friday, with its four stories and its protection against the Dajjal, explained by one of the great scholars of the modern era.
• Tafseer Soorah al-Hujurat by Dr. Bilal Philips — $19. Eighteen verses that read like a divine charter for Muslim community life — verifying news before acting, and the prohibitions of mockery, suspicion, spying, and backbiting.

The Sciences Behind Tafsir

Once you're reading tafsir regularly, these classical works deepen your understanding of how the Qur'an is explained:

• The Reasons for Revelation of the Qur'an (Asbab al-Nuzul) by al-Wahidi — $13. The earliest and most important classical work on the circumstances behind specific verses — the reference Ibn Kathir and as-Sa'di themselves drew upon. Knowing a verse's context protects you from misapplying it.
• Secrets Within the Order of the Qur'an by al-Hafiz al-Suyuti — $27. Why are the surahs arranged as they are? A pioneering study of the thematic connections that unite the chapters — a work for deepening your tadabbur.
• Paragons of the Qur'an by Ibn al-Qayyim — $15. A study of the parables Allah uses in His Book — their purpose and the truths they convey — from one of the finest writers the Arabic language has produced.

Reflection and Thematic Tafsir

Not every tafsir moves verse by verse. These gather the Qur'an's themes and reflections:

• Tayseer al-Lateef al-Mannan by as-Sa'di — $28. The central topics of the Qur'an — tawheed, the rights of Allah, the stories of the prophets — organized into a single accessible volume.
• Al-Mawahib ar-Rabbaniyyah by as-Sa'di — $19. His reflections on selected verses that particularly moved him — including the supplications of the prophets. A book to read slowly, one reflection at a time.
• Lessons from the Story of Yoosuf by as-Sa'di — $15. The most beautiful of stories, with its lessons in patience, chastity, and trust in Allah drawn out for daily life.
• Tadabbur of the Righteous — $41. Reflections on every surah from al-Fatihah to an-Nas, compiled from Ibn al-Qayyim, Ibn Taymiyyah, and other classical scholars.

Tafsir for Children

Teaching children to understand — not just recite — the Qur'an is one of the best gifts you can give them:
