About This Book

The Qur'an is inexhaustible. A scholar can spend a lifetime with a single verse and still find new meaning — new connections to the names of Allah, new wisdom for the practical questions of daily life, new light on the inner dimensions of what Allah is saying to the believer. Al-Mawahib ar-Rabbaniyyah: Reflections on Some Qur'anic Verses and the Subtle Meanings Thereof by Shaykh Abdur-Rahman Nasir As-Sa'di is a window into exactly that kind of engagement — his reflections on selected verses of the Qur'an that particularly moved him.

This is not a systematic tafsir covering the Qur'an verse by verse. It is a collection of thematic reflections on specific verses As-Sa'di chose to illuminate — drawn from different surahs and addressing a range of subjects — each one a demonstration of how a scholar with deep knowledge of Arabic, tafsir, fiqh, and the heart reads the Qur'an.

What This Book Contains

Reflections on Allah's Sublime Attributes

Several of the reflections address verses that reveal aspects of Allah's names and attributes — His mercy, His power, His wisdom, His knowledge — with the depth and clarity that characterize all of As-Sa'di's work on this subject. These reflections naturally connect to his more focused works on the names and attributes and complement them beautifully.

Supplications of the Prophets — and What They Reveal

The Qur'an preserves the supplications of the prophets — Ibrahim, Musa, Zakariyyah, Sulaiman, and others — and these du'a are among the most revealing windows into both the prophets' characters and the nature of the relationship between the believer and their Lord. As-Sa'di's reflections on these du'a are among the most moving sections of the book.

Juristic Reflections and Practical Applications

True to As-Sa'di's integrated approach to Islamic scholarship, some reflections address juristic matters — rulings related to specific verses and how the general guidance of the Qur'an applies to the practical questions of everyday Muslim life.
