About This Book
The greatest knowledge a person can possess is knowledge of their Lord — not just knowing that Allah exists, but knowing Him through His perfect names and magnificent attributes. This is the knowledge that produces love, fear, hope, reliance, and every other station of worship that the believer's heart must carry. It is also the knowledge most consistently neglected in Islamic education.
Explanation to the Beautiful and Perfect Names of Allah by Shaykh Abdur-Rahman Nasir As-Sa'di is a concise but profound explanation of the names of Allah that appear in the Qur'an — extracted from the opening of his Tafsir, Taysir al-Karim al-Rahman, and presented here as a standalone reference. The translator has supplemented As-Sa'di's explanations with the relevant Quranic verses in which each name appears, and has added names drawn from the work of Shaykh Ibn Uthaymin, bringing the total to 103 names of Allah explained with evidence.
What This Book Contains
103 Names of Allah — Each Explained from the Qur'an
As-Sa'di's original treatise covers the 89 names of Allah that he identified in the Qur'an, explaining each one in his characteristic style: precise, clear, and grounded in the Qur'an and Sunnah without any distortion or denial of meaning. The translator has added 14 additional names from Shaykh Ibn Uthaymin's work on the principles governing Allah's names and attributes, bringing the total to 103. Each name is followed by the Quranic verses in which it appears — allowing the reader to see the name in its original context.
General Principles on the Names of Allah
Before the explanations of individual names, the book presents the foundational principles that govern how Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaah understands Allah's names and attributes — principles essential for anyone who wants to engage with this knowledge correctly, rather than falling into the distortions of either side (those who deny the attributes and those who liken them to creation).
A Window Into As-Sa'di's Tafsir
As-Sa'di wrote this treatise as an introduction to his Tafsir — which means it reflects the same clarity, depth, and rootedness in evidence that made Tafsir As-Sa'di one of the most widely studied tafsir works in English. Readers familiar with his tafsir will recognize the same voice; readers encountering him for the first time will find this a good introduction to his writing.
