Best Aqeedah Books for Beginners: Where to Start with Islamic Creed

Before fiqh, before Arabic, before anything else, comes aqeedah — belief. Knowing who Allah is, what He alone deserves, and what nullifies faith is the foundation the entire religion is built on, and it is the first thing the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, called people to. The problem for most English readers is not a lack of books — it is knowing which ones to start with and in what order.

1. The Explanation of the Three Fundamental Principles — $35

Start here. This is Shaykh Salih al-Fawzan's explanation of Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab's foundational text on the three questions every person will be asked in the grave: Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your prophet? It is one of the most studied texts in Islamic education worldwide, and it gives you the framework for everything else — knowing Allah, knowing Islam, and knowing the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. 2. Kitab at-Tawheed Explained — $24

The landmark text on Islamic monotheism, written by Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab to confront grave-veneration, calling on the dead, and the distortion of Allah's names — with every argument drawn from the Qur'an and Sunnah. This English edition (Sameh Strauch's translation) follows each proof with its points of benefit, making it a self-contained study text rather than just a translation. 3. The Four Fundamental Principles — $12

A short, dense treatise (al-Qawa'id al-Arba') that exposes shirk at its root. It draws out how the mushrikeen of Quraysh acknowledged Allah as Creator and yet were still mushrikeen — because they directed worship to intermediaries — and shows that the same argument is made in every era. Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab identifies the doubts most commonly raised in defense of shirk — that intercession through the dead is permitted, that the scholars of the past approved of it, that criticizing it is a new innovation — and dismantles each one from the Qur'an and Sunnah. 5. Who Is Allah? His Names and Attributes — $22

The most important thing a Muslim can know is Allah Himself. This book by Umm Abdurrahman Sakina Hirschfelder covers over 100 of Allah's names and more than 60 of His attributes — each with its proof, its meaning, how a believer relates to Allah through it, and an authentic supplication using it. The attributes are affirmed upon the way of Ahlus-Sunnah: accepted as Allah stated them, without distortion, denial, likening to creation, or asking how. 6. The Creed of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah — $12

Once the foundation of Tawheed is laid, this concise summary by Shaykh Muhammad ibn al-Uthaymin walks through the six pillars of iman in his own clear words — belief in Allah, the angels, the books, the messengers, the Last Day, and divine decree. Shaykh Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz wrote the original as the obligatory knowledge every Muslim needs — aqeedah, the pillars of worship and their conditions, and Islamic character — arranged from the most foundational outward.
