Among the greatest obstacles facing any caller to Tawheed in every era has been the doubts raised by those who persist in shirk — claims that what they are doing is not shirk at all, that the scholars of the past approved of it, that intercession through the dead is permissible, and that criticizing these practices is a new innovation. These doubts are not new. They were raised against the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and have been raised against every sincere caller to Tawheed since.

Why Doubts Arise — and Why They Persist

The Imam opens by establishing that those who resist Tawheed are not always ignorant of the evidence — sometimes they know the evidence but have accepted arguments that seem to justify their practices. Understanding why these doubts arise, and why intelligent people accept them, is the first step to dismantling them. The Imam diagnoses the problem precisely: the mushrikeen of every era have accepted Islam at the level of the tongue while maintaining practices that contradict it in deed, convinced by specious arguments that what they are doing is within the bounds of the religion.

The Most Common Doubts — Identified and Refuted

The book addresses the specific doubts most commonly raised in defense of shirk: the claim that the Prophet himself approved of calling upon other than Allah, the claim that intercession through the righteous dead is permitted because of the Prophet's intercession, the confusion between the legitimate tawassul of the living and the prohibited calling upon the dead, and others. Each is refuted from the Qur'an and Sunnah with precision and clarity.

Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab (1115–1206 AH) was born in al-Uyaynah in Najd and studied in Madinah, Basra and al-Ahsa before returning to teach in Najd.
