About This Book

Tafsir Ibn Kathir is the most widely studied and most broadly accepted explanation of the Qur'an in the world. Ask any student of knowledge across any Muslim country which tafsir they were taught, which one they were told to begin with, which one they trust — and Tafsir Ibn Kathir is the answer that appears again and again across continents and centuries. It is not simply a popular book. It is the standard.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir: Abridged 10-Volume Set published by Darussalam is the first complete abridged English translation of this monumental work — presenting Ibn Kathir's full explanation of every surah in the Qur'an from Surah al-Fatihah to Surah al-Nas, with weak and fabricated hadiths removed, in ten hardback volumes.

What Makes Tafsir Ibn Kathir the Standard

Grounded in the Qur'an and Sunnah — The Classical Methodology

Ibn Kathir followed the methodology of the scholars of the Salaf in his tafsir: he explained the Qur'an first with the Qur'an, then with the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then with the statements of the Companions and the Tabi'een. This is the most reliable methodology for understanding the Qur'an and the one that the scholars have always recognized as superior to commentary based primarily on opinion or linguistic analysis.

Comprehensive Coverage of Every Verse

Every surah and every verse is addressed — from the longest chapter to the shortest. The 10-volume set covers: the reasons for revelation where established from authentic narrations, the meanings of the verses with evidential support, the connections between verses and surahs, the rulings derived from the text, and the historical accounts related to the Companions and prophets mentioned in the Qur'an — all verified against authentic sources.

Free from Weak and Fabricated Hadiths

Darussalam's abridged edition specifically removed narrations that Ibn Kathir himself cited but noted as weak or fabricated. The result is a presentation that benefits from Ibn Kathir's full scholarly analysis while presenting the English-speaking reader with a cleaner reference — one in which every hadith cited has been authenticated.

Stories of the Prophets — From the Source

One of the most beloved dimensions of Tafsir Ibn Kathir is its extensive treatment of the stories of the prophets as they appear in the Qur'an. Ibn Kathir distinguished carefully between what is established in the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah and what comes from Isra'iliyyat — narrations from the People of the Book — labeling each accordingly. A reader of this tafsir knows what the Qur'an actually says about the prophets, not what folklore has added to it.

About the Author

Imam Isma'il ibn Kathir (700–774 AH) studied under Shaykhul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah and wrote across tafsir, hadith and Islamic history. His Tafsir has been taught in Islamic institutions for over six centuries and is what scholars commonly direct students to first for serious Quranic study. Published by Darussalam Publishers.

Who This Book Is For

Every Muslim home and every Muslim library. This is the foundational English tafsir reference — the one to start with, the one to return to, the one to gift to a new Muslim or a student of knowledge beginning their study of the Qur'an. At ten volumes it is a substantial investment, but one that will be read, referenced, and benefited from for generations.
