Books by Ibn Kathir: Where to Start

Ask a student of knowledge anywhere in the world which explanation of the Qur'an to read, and one name comes back more than any other: Ibn Kathir. Imam Isma'il ibn Umar ibn Kathir (d. 774H) was a student of Shaykhul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, an imam who followed the way of the Salaf as-Salih, and a historian and mufassir whose work has outlasted almost everything written alongside it. His method is the reason. Rather than lead with his own opinion, he explains the Qur'an by the Qur'an, then by the authentic Sunnah, then by the statements of the Companions and those who followed them — and he tells you which narrations are strong and which are not.

If you have searched for books by Ibn Kathir in English and felt unsure where to begin, this guide will help. His English catalogue is narrower than his teacher's, but what exists is essential — and the main question is which format suits you.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir in English: The Complete Abridged Set

The Tafsir Ibn Kathir Abridged 10 Volume Set ($267.00) from Darussalam is the serious reader's edition — the whole Qur'an, cover to cover, in ten hardback volumes. "Abridged" here does not mean thin: the editors trimmed the chains of narration and the weaker reports, leaving the explanation itself intact. This is the set that sits on the shelf for thirty years and gets opened every week.

It is a real investment, and worth being honest about that. If you read the Qur'an daily and want one reference beside you for life, this is it. If you are still building the habit, start smaller — the next section is for you.

Starting Smaller: Tafsir Ibn Kathir by the Juz

You do not have to buy the whole tafsir to read Ibn Kathir. Two single-volume editions cover the two sections of the Qur'an most Muslims actually spend their time in.

Juz Amma: Tafseer Ibn Katheer Part 30 ($19.00), translated by Sameh Strauch, explains the final thirtieth of the Qur'an — the short surahs every Muslim memorises first and recites in prayer most often. If you have been reciting these surahs your whole life without knowing what occasioned them or what they are pointing at, this one volume changes that.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir: Juz Tabaarak Part 29 ($11.00) covers the twenty-ninth juz, which opens with Surah al-Mulk — the chapter the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) encouraged us to recite every night. Our reflection on the reward of reciting Surah al-Mulk every night sits directly on this material, and at eleven dollars this is the cheapest way to put Ibn Kathir in your hands.

Stories of the Prophets by Ibn Kathir

Outside the tafsir, his most read work in English is Stories of the Prophets ($29.00) — one of our best sellers, and drawn from the same material as his history al-Bidayah wa an-Nihayah. Allah commands us in His Book to relate these accounts so that people may reflect, and Ibn Kathir does it the way he does everything: from the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah first, with the Israelite tales he considers unreliable marked as such rather than smuggled in. That discipline is exactly why this book is trusted where other collections of prophet stories are not.

Ibn Kathir for Children

If you want your children in this material early, The Story of the Prophet Muhammad from Ibn Kathir's Stories of the Prophets ($21.00) by Muslimkid adapts his account of the Prophet's life (peace and blessings be upon him) for young readers, without inventing anything he did not write.

Where to Start with Ibn Kathir's Books

A gentle path is to begin with Juz Tabaarak ($11.00) or Juz Amma ($19.00) — read one surah's explanation before you recite it in the next prayer and see what happens. Add Stories of the Prophets ($29.00) for the narrative side of his work. When the habit is set and you want the whole Book explained, the 10-volume abridged set ($267.00) is the destination, and our reflection on the Qur'an as the Word of Allah is a good frame for why the effort is worth it.

Ibn Kathir also sits inside a wider circle worth knowing. He studied under Shaykhul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah — our guide to books by Ibn Taymiyyah covers his teacher — and his contemporary Ibn al-Qayyim came out of the same school. Read the three together and you have the heart of what that circle produced.

Every title above is vetted upon the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah upon the manhaj of the Salaf as-Salih, and ships from our shop here in Portland.
