About This Book
The women of the first generation of Islam are among the most important figures in Islamic history — yet their stories remain among the least known to English-speaking Muslims. They were the wives and daughters of the Prophet, the mothers and sisters of the Companions, the first teachers of the women of this ummah, and witnesses to the revelation itself. Their biographies are not supplementary to Islamic history — they are at its center.
The Illustrious Women of Islam from the First Generation is a collection of biographies drawn from two of the most authoritative sources in Islamic biographical literature: the works of Imam al-Dhahabi and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani — two scholars whose standards of hadith verification and biographical documentation are among the most rigorous in Islamic history.
What This Book Contains
The Wives and Closest Women of the Prophet
The first section covers the women closest to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) — his wives (Mothers of the Believers), his daughters, his nursing mothers, his granddaughters, his paternal aunts, his paternal cousins, and his nursing sisters. These biographies come from Imam al-Dhahabi's monumental biographical dictionary, filtered and presented here in English for the first time. For Khadijah, Aisha, Fatimah, and the other wives and daughters — this is among the most authentically sourced biographical resource available.
A Biographical Encyclopedia — From Mankind and the Jinn
The second section, drawn from Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's encyclopedic work, is arranged alphabetically and covers an extraordinary range of notable women from the first generations of Islam — from the Companions to the Tabi'een — including not only the famous names but dozens of lesser-known women whose stories have never been translated into English before.
About the Original Sources
Imam Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi (673–748 AH) was one of the greatest scholars of hadith criticism and Islamic biography in history. Al-Hafiz Ahmad ibn Hajar al-Asqalani (773–852 AH) was the author of Fath al-Bari and is considered the greatest hadith scholar of the ninth Islamic century. Published by Authentic Statements Publications.
