About This Book

The era before Islam is described in the Qur'an and Sunnah as jahiliyyah — a time of ignorance. But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) warned that aspects of that ignorance would return and persist in the Muslim community. Understanding what those aspects are is essential for any Muslim who wants to protect their iman and their community from the deviations that plagued humanity before guidance arrived.

Explanation of Aspects of Jahiliyyah presents Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab's original treatise identifying the core traits, beliefs, and practices of the pre-Islamic era of ignorance — with a detailed explanation by Shaykh Abdul Aziz ar-Rajihi that draws out the lessons for the Muslim today. Many of the aspects identified are not ancient history. They continue to manifest — sometimes in obvious forms, sometimes in subtle ones — in Muslim communities worldwide.

What This Book Covers

The Defining Traits of Jahiliyyah

Ibn Abd al-Wahhab systematically identifies the characteristics of the age of ignorance — in aqeedah, in worship, in social conduct, and in the approach to knowledge and authority. Shaykh ar-Rajihi's explanation makes each point concrete, showing how each aspect of jahiliyyah that the Prophet came to eradicate continues to appear in various forms in the contemporary world.

A Mirror for Self-Reflection

This book is not primarily an academic study of pre-Islamic Arabia. It is a mirror — designed to help the believer examine their own beliefs and practices against the standard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent to establish. Aspects of jahiliyyah that a Muslim might have absorbed from their culture or environment without realizing it are identified clearly, giving the reader both the diagnosis and the direction for correction.

Safeguarding the Purity of Islam

The deeper purpose of the book is protection: helping the reader recognize the remnants of jahiliyyah wherever they appear so they can distance themselves from them and uphold the purity of Islam as it was revealed. This is precisely the purpose for which Ibn Abd al-Wahhab wrote it — and why Shaykh ar-Rajihi's explanation makes it as relevant to the present as it was to the eighteenth century.

About the Authors

The original treatise is by Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab (1115–1206 AH), who was born in al-Uyaynah in Najd and studied in Madinah, Basra and al-Ahsa before returning to teach in Najd, devoting his life to calling the Muslim community back to Tawheed on the evidence of the Qur'an and Sunnah. This explanation is by Shaykh Abdul Aziz ar-Rajihi, a professor at the Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University in Riyadh who teaches in its faculty of usool ad-din. Published by Al-Ihsan Publications.

Who This Book Is For

Every Muslim who wants to understand what aspects of the pre-Islamic era of ignorance still exist around them — and within themselves — and how to identify and uproot them. Valuable for students of aqeedah and manhaj, particularly those engaging with questions about bid'ah and the corruption of Islamic practice.

From the same author, The Four Fundamental Principles sets out what distinguishes tawheed from shirk, The Removal of Doubts answers the arguments raised in defence of it, and The Nullifiers of Islam covers what removes a person from the religion entirely.
