About This Book

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said about Paradise: "In it is what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and has never occurred to the heart of a human being." (Sahih al-Bukhari 3244, Sahih Muslim 2824) No imagination can reach it. No comparison can capture it. And yet Allah has given us — through the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah — a rich body of descriptions of what awaits those who enter.

Descriptions of Paradise by Imam Ibn Abi Dunya is a classical hadith compilation devoted entirely to these descriptions — gathering the authentic narrations of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the statements of the Companions and Salaf about the nature of Paradise, its dwellings, its rivers, its food, its light, and above all its greatest joy: the vision of Allah.

What This Book Contains

Authenticated Prophetic Narrations

The book is structured around hadith — the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) describing Paradise. These narrations cover the gates of Paradise, the levels of the believers within it, the nature of the Tree of Tuba, the rivers of water, milk, honey, and wine that flow through it, the palaces and tents of the people of Paradise, the clothing and adornment of its inhabitants, and the nature of time and experience within it.

The Highest Joy — The Vision of Allah

The greatest reward in Paradise is not its food, its gardens, or its palaces — it is the vision of Allah, the Mighty and Magnificent. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the people of Paradise enter Paradise, Allah — Blessed and Exalted is He — will say: 'Do you want me to give you anything more?' They will say: 'Have You not brightened our faces? Have You not entered us into Paradise and saved us from the Fire?' Then He will lift the veil, and they will not have been given anything more beloved to them than looking at their Lord." (Sahih Muslim 181) This narration and those like it are among the most important in the book.

Statements of the Companions and the Salaf

Beyond the hadith, the book includes statements from the Companions and the early generations of Islam — reflecting on Paradise, longing for it, and using its descriptions as motivation for righteous action in this world.
