About This Book

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Fire complained to its Lord saying: 'Parts of me have consumed other parts.' So it was permitted two breaths: one in winter and one in summer. The most severe cold you feel is from its zimhareer, and the most severe heat you feel is from its samoom." (Al-Bukhari and Muslim). The Hellfire is real. It has been described by Allah and His Messenger in detail — and those descriptions are one of the most powerful motivations for righteous action available to the believer.

Fleeing From the Fire by Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali — a translation of Al-Takhwif Min Al-Nar — is a classical compilation of the Prophetic narrations, Quranic verses, and statements of the scholars on the reality of Hellfire, its descriptions, its inhabitants, the means of safeguarding oneself from it, and the state of those who truly feared it. Ibn Rajab gathered these texts with the stated purpose of awakening heedlessness and moving the reader toward the positive action that leads toward its opposite: Paradise.

What This Book Covers

The Descriptions of Hellfire from Qur'an and Sunnah

The book draws together the most important Quranic verses and authentic narrations describing the reality of the Hellfire — its heat, its depths, its inhabitants, its punishments, and the experience of those who enter it. These are not presented as abstract theology but as vivid, prophetically established realities intended to move the heart of the believer toward genuine fear and preparation.

The State of the Salaf in Their Fear of the Fire

Some of the most powerful sections of the book contain the statements and states of the Companions and the Salaf regarding Hellfire — how they thought about it, how it affected their worship, the lengths they went to in order to protect themselves from it. The example of Umar ibn al-Khattab holding a flame near himself and saying "How will you be patient if you encounter this?" captures the spirit of the book precisely.

The Means of Safeguarding Oneself

Beyond descriptions and warnings, the book covers the means the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) identified for protecting oneself from the Fire — the acts that serve as shields, the states of heart that keep a person on the right path, and the practical steps the believer takes to ensure they are among those who flee it successfully.
