About This Book
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah says: 'I am as My servant thinks of Me.'" (Al-Bukhari and Muslim). This hadith is one of the most weighty statements in the entire Sunnah — establishing that how a Muslim thinks about Allah directly shapes how Allah deals with them. A servant who approaches Allah with good expectations will find them met. A servant who approaches with despair will find that too.
Having Good Thoughts of Allah presents two complementary texts by Imam Ibn Abi Dunya in a single volume: Having Good Thoughts of Allah and Having True Reliance on Allah — two acts of worship of the heart that the author establishes are inseparably linked. You cannot truly rely on Allah without thinking well of Him. And thinking well of Him naturally produces the reliance that distinguishes the believer from everyone else.
What This Book Covers
What It Means to Think Well of Allah
Ibn Abi Dunya draws on Quranic verses, authentic hadith, and the statements of the Companions and the Salaf to establish what it actually means to have good thoughts of Allah — not wishful thinking or presumption, but a grounded confidence in Allah's mercy, His generosity, His closeness, and His response to the one who turns to Him sincerely. This is the husn al-dhann that the believer is commanded to cultivate.
Having True Reliance on Allah — Tawakkul
The second text addresses tawakkul — not passive resignation or abandonment of means, but the active reliance of the heart on Allah while taking the means that Allah has established. Ibn Abi Dunya distinguishes true tawakkul from its distortions and grounds it in the Qur'an and Sunnah, showing how the Salaf understood and practiced it.
How the Two Are Linked
The most important insight of the book is the relationship between the two: thinking well of Allah is the foundation from which genuine tawakkul grows, and tawakkul is the fruit that demonstrates the sincerity of one's husn al-dhann. A person who claims to think well of Allah but does not rely on Him has not truly internalized what they claim to believe.
About the Author
Imam Abu Bakr Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Dunya (208–281 AH) was a prolific hadith collector and scholar of the early period, known for his compilations on subjects of the heart, the afterlife, and Islamic character. Published by Dar as-Sunnah Publishers.
Who This Book Is For
Every Muslim who struggles with anxiety, despair, or a sense that their du'a is not heard — this book addresses the root of that struggle directly. Equally valuable for those going through trials who need a grounded, Sunnah-based understanding of what it means to rely on Allah. And for any believer who wants to cultivate the two heart-states that Ibn Abi Dunya identifies as essential: thinking well of Allah and genuinely relying on Him.
