About This Book

Allah, the Most High, said: "O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters, and the women of the believers, to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments." — Al-Ahzab (33:59)

The question of how a Muslim woman should dress is not a cultural debate — it is a matter settled by the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah. The Dress Code for the Muslim Woman by Imam Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani (may Allah have mercy on him) is one of the most comprehensive and rigorously evidenced treatments of this subject available in English. Published by Dar as-Sunnah Publishers, this 240-page work draws entirely from the Qur'an, the authentic hadith, and the statements of the Companions and Imams — not cultural tradition or opinion unsupported by evidence.

What This Book Covers

The Eight Conditions of the Muslim Woman's Dress

Shaykh al-Albani establishes, through detailed textual evidence, the specific conditions a Muslim woman's outer clothing must meet to be considered properly Islamic — covering the full body, not being an adornment in itself, not being tight or transparent, not resembling the dress of non-Muslim women or of men, and not attracting undue attention. Each condition is grounded in Qur'anic verses and authenticated hadith.

The Jilbab and Khimar in Detail

The book addresses what the jilbab and khimar are, how they were worn by the women of the Companions, and what constitutes the minimum Islamic requirement versus what is recommended. The author engages with differences of opinion among the classical scholars and resolves them through the evidence — including his well-known treatment of the niqab and the face veil.

Responses to Common Objections

Shaykh al-Albani addresses the most common claims used to cast doubt on Islamic dress requirements — that hijab is cultural, that it was not obligatory in the early period, or that modern conditions justify relaxing the rulings. Each objection is answered methodically from the Qur'an and Sunnah.

Who This Book Is For

This is essential reading for every Muslim woman who wants to understand her obligation from the sources directly, without relying on second-hand summaries or cultural assumptions. It is equally valuable for fathers, husbands, Islamic teachers, and anyone engaging with questions about Muslim women's dress in dawah or in response to criticism of Islam. At 240 pages it is thorough without being inaccessible — written to be understood and acted upon.
