Books by Shaykh al-Albani: Where to Start

Shaykh Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani (1332–1420 AH) was born in Shkodër, Albania, and moved with his family to Damascus as a child. He learned Arabic there, worked for years in his father's trade of watch repair, and gave his free hours to the study of hadith, much of it in the az-Zahiriyyah Library. He later taught for a period at the Islamic University of Madinah, and he spent his life gathering narrations, examining their chains, and separating the authentic from the weak.
That work runs through every book of his we carry: each ruling is built on narrations he authenticated, with the evidence shown. If you have searched for books by Shaykh al-Albani and felt unsure where to begin, this guide groups the titles we carry at The Islamic Book Cafe and gives you a reading order.
Shaykh al-Albani on the Prophet's Prayer
A Textbook on the Prayer: Description of the Prophet's Prayer gathers the authenticated narrations that describe how the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed, from the opening takbir to the closing salam, with the hadith for every position and recitation. We have written about how it compares with the positions of the four schools in Comparing Description of the Prophet's Prayer, and our guide on how to pray salah covers the conditions and pillars.
Hajj and Umrah According to the Sunnah
The Right Way to Perform Hajj and Umrah is the Shaykh's simplified guide to the rites, drawn from his longer study of the hadith of Jabir ibn Abdullah describing the Prophet's Hajj, with further rulings added. It is written for the ordinary pilgrim rather than the specialist.
Marriage and the Muslim Woman's Dress
The Marriage Guide According to the Sunnah of the Prophet sets out the rulings and etiquettes of marriage from the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah. The Dress Code for the Muslim Woman treats the hijab across some 240 pages, drawing on the Qur'an, the authentic hadith and the statements of the Companions and the imams. For more on the subject, see The Hijab: Modesty, Not Oppression and our guide to the best Islamic books for Muslim women.
The Place of the Sunnah in the Religion
Follow the Sunnah of the Prophet brings together three of his works on the status of the Sunnah and its relationship to the Qur'an. It answers the claim that the Qur'an alone is sufficient, showing that Allah commanded obedience to the Messenger and that the Qur'an cannot be understood or practised without the Sunnah that explains it. Read more in our Book of the Month feature on Follow the Sunnah of the Prophet.
Where to Start with Shaykh al-Albani's Books
Start with Follow the Sunnah of the Prophet, because it explains why the rest of his work matters. Then take up the Textbook on the Prayer and check your prayer against it one section at a time. Add the Marriage Guide and the Dress Code as your household needs them, and read the Hajj and Umrah guide before you travel.
For the hadith collections his gradings are used alongside, see our guides to books by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, books by Imam an-Nawawi, and the best hadith books. His daughter's books are in the Sukaynah bint al-Albani collection.
