About This Book

Everyone wants to be happy. Yet most people have never stopped to define what happiness actually is, where it truly comes from, or what stands between them and it. 8 Steps to Happiness by Shaykh Abdur-Rahman Nasir As-Sa'di is a short but remarkably precise treatment of this question — grounded entirely in the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and a deep understanding of the human soul.

What This Book Covers

What Happiness Actually Is — and Where It Comes From

Shaykh As-Sa'di opens by dismantling the common misunderstanding that happiness is a destination or a set of external circumstances. It is not found in wealth, status, health, or relationships — though these can be among its fruits. True happiness is an inner state that results from specific qualities of the heart and a specific orientation toward Allah. It can be cultivated, and it can be lost, and the Qur'an and Sunnah tell us exactly how.

The Eight Steps

The Shaykh identifies eight practical, actionable steps for achieving happiness and repelling its opposites — sadness, grief, and anxiety. These steps are rooted in three main causes he identifies as essential to living a truly good life. Each step is concise, clearly explained, and immediately applicable — this is not a long theoretical work but a focused prescription, written for people who need clarity and direction.

The Prophetic Foundation

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Those among you destined to be from the people of happiness will find it easy to enact the deeds of the people of happiness." (Sahih al-Bukhari 4949) Shaykh As-Sa'di builds upon this hadith to show that happiness in the next life and a meaningful, anchored life in this one are not separate goals — they follow from the same path, and that path is accessible to every Muslim who sincerely pursues it.
