The Inner Secrets of Worship By Imam ibn Qudamah al-Maqdisi (d. 620H)

In the third installment of Imam Ibn Qudamah al-Maqdisi's series on the Islamic sciences of the heart, The Inner Secrets of Worship addresses the internal dimensions of the five pillars and other major acts of worship — establishing that the outward form of worship, without the correct inner states, does not achieve what Allah intended it to achieve.

The book examines each major act of worship and identifies the inner states that give it its spirit: the fear and hope in purification, the presence of heart in prayer, the sincerity and gratitude in fasting, the humility and love in Hajj, and the contentment in zakah.

The Inward Dimensions of Purity (Taharah)

Purification is not only external. Ibn Qudamah opens by establishing that physical purity must be accompanied by the internal intention to prepare the heart for meeting Allah in prayer — and that approaching worship heedlessly strips it of much of its benefit.

The Secret of Prayer: Khushu'

The most developed section of the book addresses khushu' — the presence of heart, humility, and awareness of Allah's greatness that transforms mechanical prayer into genuine communication with the Creator. Ibn Qudamah draws on the Qur'an and hadith to explain what khushu' consists of and how it is cultivated.

The Inner Dimensions of Fasting, Zakah, and Hajj

Each pillar is examined for its spiritual dimension — what the heart should be doing while the body performs the act, and what the worship achieves in the soul when its outward form is accompanied by its inward reality.

About the Author

Imam Muwaffaq al-Din Ibn Qudamah al-Maqdisi (541–620 AH) was born in Jama'il, Palestine, and educated in Damascus. A Hanbali jurist, he wrote the nine-volume Al-Mughni, a principal reference in Hanbali fiqh. Published by Dar as-Sunnah Publishers.
