About This Book

Inner Dimensions of the Prayer is the English translation of Asrar as-Salah by Imam Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah — a short but penetrating treatise on the reality of salah beneath its outward form. It does not teach the reader how to perform the prayer. It addresses the far harder question of how to be present in it.

Allah did not describe the successful believers merely as those who pray, but as those who are humbly submissive within their prayer. That single distinction — between performing salah and being present in it — is the subject of this book.

Ibn al-Qayyim examines khushu — the humility, stillness, and presence of heart that Allah made the mark of the successful believer. The Inner Meanings of the Stages of Prayer

The treatise walks through the prayer as a journey — the takbir that severs the worshipper from the world behind them, the standing and recitation, the bowing, the prostration in which the servant is nearest to their Lord, and the sitting — drawing out what each physical posture signifies about submission, need, and humility before Allah. The outward actions are shown to be the visible form of an inward reality, not a sequence to be completed.

Why the Prayer Can Feel Empty — and What Restores It

Ibn al-Qayyim addresses directly the condition many Muslims recognize in themselves: praying regularly while feeling nothing, finishing the salah without remembering what was recited, treating the prayer as an obligation to discharge rather than a meeting to be anticipated. He identifies what causes this deadness in the heart and what returns the prayer to being what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) described it as — a delight rather than a duty.

Imam Shams ad-Din Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr, known as Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (691–751 AH), studied under Shaykhul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah in Damascus and remained with him until his teacher's death.
