The Seven Conditions of the Shahadah

Knowledge

A person must know what La ilaha illallah affirms and what it negates — that all deities worshipped besides Allah are false, and that worship belongs to Allah alone. The shahada cannot be accepted from someone who does not understand what they are saying.

Certainty

The heart must hold the testimony with complete conviction, free from doubt. The Qur'an and Sunnah are explicit that doubt in the fundamentals of iman renders it incomplete.

Truthfulness

The tongue must reflect what the heart actually holds. A hypocrite who says the words while his heart rejects them receives no benefit from the testimony.

Compliance

The believer must comply with what the testimony requires — performing the obligatory acts and avoiding the prohibited ones — not merely affirm it verbally while ignoring its demands.

Acceptance

The heart must accept the testimony and what it entails, not reject it with arrogance as Iblis rejected the command to prostrate while acknowledging it.

Sincerity

All worship must be directed to Allah alone, free from shirk. This condition is the essence of La ilaha illallah — that no one other than Allah receives any act that belongs exclusively to Him.

Love

The believer must love Allah and love what He loves, including loving those who uphold Tawheed and hating what Allah hates — all for His sake.
