A True and Sincere Muslim | The Ideal Muslim

To be a true and sincere Muslim is to embody sidq — truthfulness — in one's relationship with Allah. Sidq is the quality of being inwardly and outwardly true: truthful in speech, sincere in intention, and faithful to the commitments one has made to Allah. It is the opposite of hypocrisy, and it is the trait that defined the best of this ummah.

What It Means to Be True and Sincere (Sidq)

A Muslim who has sidq is true to Allah and sincere toward Him. He affirms what Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) conveyed in the Qur'an and Sunnah, and he holds to it as the truth. He keeps the covenant of his shahadah faithfully, for it is a binding promise between him and his Lord. He speaks the truth about Allah without fear or hesitation, affirming what Allah affirmed of Himself without distorting it or explaining away what Allah did not explain. And he strives to fulfil his duties in the best manner, knowing that Allah is always watching.

Sincerity Begins with Knowledge and Pure Intention

Two concepts are essential here: niyyah (intention) and ikhlas (sincerity and purity). Without understanding them, a person cannot worship Allah as He deserves. Sound intention flows from a pure heart, and a pure heart is built through knowledge of Allah. The more a believer learns about his Lord, the more his love for Him grows — and as that love grows, he becomes more conscious of Allah in everything he does, which in turn purifies his intentions. This is the very purpose for which we were created. Allah says:

"And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me."
(adh-Dhariyat 51:56)

Be Ever Watchful of Allah

The next dimension of sidq is to remain alert to Allah — awake, watchful, and conscious of His greatness. The believer comes to know his Lord by reflecting on His creation, recognising that Allah is the Most High, without limit or likeness. Allah says:

"Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], 'Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.'"
(Aal Imran 3:190-191)

The one whose heart is fixed on Allah takes nothing for granted and is constantly grateful. Being watchful of Allah is itself a protection from Shaytan: when the heart is anchored in Allah, the fleeting desires of this world lose their grip, and there remains nothing in the seen or unseen world to truly fear but Him.

Learn from the Example of the Companions

One of the reasons the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) were so successful is that they remained conscious of Allah — they were true and sincere Muslims. This world held little weight for them; pleasing Allah was everything. They never regarded their own deeds as enough, and their fear of displeasing Allah was profound. The Truthfulness of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq

No one embodied sidq more completely than Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), who earned the very title as-Siddiq — the one who utterly affirms the truth. His truthfulness was not mere words; it was a firm footing in faith that never wavered, even under pressure. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

"Allah sent me (as a Prophet) to you (people) but you said (to me), 'You are telling a lie,' while Abu Bakr said, 'He has said the truth,' and consoled me with himself and his money."
(Sahih al-Bukhari 3661)

It is also famously related in the books of seerah that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told the people of his Night Journey to Jerusalem and his ascension through the heavens, the disbelievers rushed to Abu Bakr expecting him to doubt — yet he answered without hesitation that if the Prophet had said it, then it was true. From Abu Bakr we learn how to stand firm in the deen even in the face of ridicule and opposition. Allah commands us:

"And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided."
(Aal Imran 3:103)
