8 Causes of Weak Faith | A Book Excerpt from Weakness of Faith

Weakness of Faith by Muhammad Salih al-Munajjid book cover

After identifying the 22 symptoms of weak faith, Shaykh Muhammad Salih al-Munajjid, hafidhahullah, turns to the root causes — the conditions and habits that drain the heart of its iman. In Chapter 2 of Weakness of Faith, he identifies 8 key causes.

He writes: "There are many reasons for weakness in faith, some of which are associated with symptoms we have discussed previously, such as falling into sins and excessive preoccupation with worldly pursuits. The following are some additional causes."

8 Causes of Weak Faith

  1. Remaining distant from an atmosphere of faith for a long period of time — when a person is cut off from circles of knowledge, dhikr, and righteous company, the heart naturally drifts.
  2. Distance from righteous examples — the absence of scholars, elders, and role models whose conduct inspires and corrects.
  3. Failure to seek knowledge and interact with the books of early scholars — the heart is fed by beneficial knowledge; without it, it starves.
  4. Presence in an environment saturated with disobedience to Allah — what surrounds a person shapes him, whether he realises it or not.
  5. Excessive preoccupation with this world, to the point that the heart becomes a slave to it — when dunya becomes the primary concern, akhirah fades from view.
  6. Excessive preoccupation with property, spouse, and children — love of these is natural, but when it overwhelms the heart, it crowds out the love of Allah.
  7. Extended hope and expectation that one will still be alive at a future time — the one who forgets death delays repentance and falls into heedlessness.
  8. An excess of food, sleep, staying up late, and talking and mixing with people — these harden the heart and blunt its sensitivity to Allah.

A Reflection

What is striking about this list is how ordinary these causes are. None of them require dramatic sin. They are the everyday conditions of modern life — busy schedules, endless screens, poor company, and a world that constantly pulls the heart away from Allah.

The believer who identifies these causes in his own life has already taken the first step toward change. The next step is to seek the cure — which the book addresses in its third and final chapter.
