About This Book
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your actions alone will not save any of you." The Companions asked: "Not even you, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied: "Not even me, unless Allah were to envelop me in His mercy. Be firm, steadfast and balanced; and journey to Allah in the beginning of the day, the end of the day, and a portion of the latter part of the night. Moderation, moderation! Through this you will attain your goal." (Al-Bukhari)
Journey to Allah by Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali is an explanation of this hadith — one of the most important single narrations for understanding the Islamic path and the believer's relationship with deeds, reliance on Allah, and the journey of the heart.
What This Book Covers
The Core Principle: Salvation Is by the Mercy of Allah
Ibn Rajab opens by establishing the foundational lesson of this hadith — that deeds, however many and however excellent, do not of themselves earn Paradise. They are means, not guarantees. What saves a person is the mercy and grace of Allah alone. This does not mean deeds are unimportant — they are essential — but that the believer's posture toward them must be one of hope in Allah, not pride in one's own performance. This single insight reshapes how a Muslim approaches worship.
Firmness, Steadfastness, and Balance
The Prophet's prescription — be firm, steadfast, and balanced — is unpacked in detail. Ibn Rajab explains what each quality means in practice and how the three together describe the ideal approach to the religious life. The emphasis on balance and moderation is particularly relevant: the person who drives himself beyond his capacity will eventually collapse, while the one who is consistent, even in small deeds, will reach his goal.
Journeying to Allah at the Three Times
The specific times the Prophet mentioned — the beginning of the day, its end, and the latter part of the night — are not arbitrary. Ibn Rajab explores why these times hold particular significance in the Islamic tradition and what worship at these specific moments does for the heart. This section draws on the broader tradition of Islamic spirituality grounded in the Sunnah.
