Muhammad ibn Ali ash-Shawkani

Al-Imam Muhammad ibn Ali ash-Shawkani (1173–1250 AH) was a scholar, jurist, and judge of Yemen, known for his work in hadith, tafsir, and the principles of jurisprudence, and for his call to follow the evidence of the Qur'an and Sunnah over blind adherence to a school. Based in Sana'a, he studied under the scholars of his land, rose to the position of chief judge, and taught a great many students across the sciences.

He is best known for Nayl al-Awtar, his commentary on the hadith of legal rulings, his tafsir Fath al-Qadir, and Irshad al-Fuhul in the principles of fiqh. His works remain widely studied among students of knowledge.
