Muhammad ibn Ali ash-Shawkani
Al-Imam Muhammad ibn Ali ash-Shawkani (1173–1250 AH) was a leading scholar, jurist, and judge of Yemen, renowned for his mastery of hadith, tafsir, and the principles of jurisprudence, and for his call to follow the evidence of the Qur'an and Sunnah over blind adherence to a school. Based in Sana'a, he studied under the scholars of his land, rose to the position of chief judge, and taught a great many students across the sciences.
He is best known for Nayl al-Awtar, a celebrated commentary on the hadith of legal rulings, his tafsir Fath al-Qadir, and Irshad al-Fuhul in the principles of fiqh. His works remain widely studied and highly regarded among students of knowledge.
