As-Sayyid Sabiq (1915–2000) was an Egyptian scholar and al-Azhar graduate best known for Fiqh us-Sunnah, one of the most widely circulated works of Islamic jurisprudence of the twentieth century. Written to make the rulings of worship and daily life accessible to ordinary Muslims rather than to specialists, it presents each ruling alongside its evidence from the Qur'an and the Sunnah, and sets out the positions of the major schools rather than confining itself to one.
That method is what gave the book its reach — it is taught and referenced across the Muslim world and has been translated into many languages. It has also been the subject of serious scholarly review: Shaykh Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani devoted a full work, Tamam al-Minnah, to examining its narrations and correcting where he judged the evidence had been applied loosely. Readers who want the fiqh of the Sunnah with its proofs, and who are willing to read a widely used reference alongside the scholarly commentary on it, will find the work valuable.
