Syed Jalaluddin Umri (1935–2022) was an Indian Islamic scholar and writer, born in the village of Puttagram in what is now Tamil Nadu. He was a graduate of Jamia Darussalam in Oomerabad, where he took a master's degree in Islamic studies, and he also held a degree in English literature from Aligarh Muslim University.
He spent his career in writing, research and editorial work, serving for five years as editor of the monthly journal Zindagi-e-Nau, and led Jamaat-e-Islami Hind as its Amir from 2007 to 2019. His books address the practical and ethical dimensions of Islamic life, drawing together the statements of classical and later scholars on subjects such as enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong — a duty he treated as central to the moral responsibility of the individual and the community alike.
