Book of the Month: Attributes of the Righteous Woman by Umm Abdillah bint Shaykh Muqbil al-Wadi'i

Each month at The Islamic Book Cafe we spotlight one book we believe every Muslim should know about. This month we are highlighting a title that is rarely discussed, written by an author most Muslims have never heard of, and that is precisely why it deserves to be highlighted.

Most books written for Muslim women are written by men. This one is not.

Attributes of the Righteous Woman was written by Umm Abdillah bint Shaykh Muqbil al-Wadi'i, the daughter of a scholar of hadith, raised in a household defined by scholarship, authentic practice, and dedication to the Sunnah. She witnessed from childhood what it looks like to live Islam from its sources rather than from culture or convenience. And she wrote this book to pass that on.

Who Is Umm Abdillah bint Shaykh Muqbil?

Shaykh Muqbil ibn Hadi al-Wadi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) devoted his life to the science of hadith and to teaching in Yemen, where he established a centre of study that trained a generation of students. His daughter grew up in his household, studied under him, and carries in her writing the mark of a person who learned Islam from its sources rather than from summaries.

Her voice in this book is direct, warm, and without the softening that sometimes dilutes the strength of Islamic guidance in an attempt to appeal to a contemporary audience. She addresses Muslim women as intelligent adults who are capable of hearing the truth about what their deen requires of them, and who deserve that honesty.

What This Book Covers

The book examines the qualities that define the righteous Muslim woman from the Qur'an and Sunnah: her relationship with Allah, her character, her conduct in her home and with her family, her interactions with other women, and her broader role in the Muslim community. It is thorough without being exhausting and direct without being harsh.

Her Relationship With Allah

The foundation of the book is the Muslim woman's relationship with her Lord: her worship, her dependence on Allah, and the interior life that sustains her through the demands of family, social obligation, and the trials that come with them. Umm Abdillah establishes this foundation before addressing anything else, because without it, the outward qualities she then discusses have no root.

Character and Conduct

The qualities of patience, gratitude, modesty, truthfulness, and contentment are addressed not as abstract virtues but as lived realities, with specific guidance on how they are expressed in the situations Muslim women actually face. The treatment is grounded in hadith throughout.

Family and Home

The book addresses the Muslim woman's role as a wife, a mother, and a daughter with the clarity and depth that this subject deserves, including the specific rights and obligations that belong to each role, and the prophetic guidance that shapes how a Muslim woman navigates the relationships that define her daily life.

Why This Book Is Rarely Talked About

This is not a widely promoted book, and its author is not a social media personality. What it is, is a substantive and authentically grounded treatment of Islamic womanhood in English, written by someone with the knowledge and the lived experience to address the subject.

That is exactly why we are highlighting it this month. The books most worth reading are often the ones no one has told you about yet. If you are new to Islamic books for women, our post on the best Islamic books for new Muslims is a good starting point before diving into a work of this depth, and Women's Rights in Islam covers the wider question of what Islam grants women.

Who Should Read This Book

Every Muslim woman who wants to understand what righteousness looks like in the full context of her life, not in a watered-down, culturally accommodated version, but from the Qur'an and Sunnah as understood by the scholars. Also useful for Muslim men who want to understand what Islam actually asks of and offers to the women in their lives. Browse our full Muslim Women collection at The Islamic Book Cafe.
