Al-Imam Abu Isa Muhammad ibn Isa at-Tirmidhi (209–279 AH) was one of the great masters of hadith and a compiler of one of the six canonical collections. Born in Tirmidh in Khurasan, he travelled extensively in pursuit of hadith and studied under the foremost scholars of the age — foremost among them Imam al-Bukhari, from whom he took a great deal — becoming renowned for his memory and precision.
He is best known for his Jami (Sunan at-Tirmidhi), distinguished by its careful attention to the gradings of hadith and the positions of the jurists, which makes it a uniquely valuable reference. His collection remains one of the pillars of the study of the Sunnah.
