Suggested Reading Order:

  1. Shahadah
  2. The Explanation of The Three Fundamental Principles
  3. Kitab At-Tawheed

Study Tips:

  • Begin with sincere intention (niyyah) for the sake of Allah alone. As the Prophet ﷺ said: "Indeed, actions are judged by intentions" (Bukhari & Muslim). Scholars emphasize that the student of knowledge must constantly renew their intention to maintain sincerity throughout their studies.
  • Take notes and review them regularly. Al-Zuhri, a Tabi'i, said: "Whoever gathers knowledge should review it frequently." Repetition and consistent review are proven methods used by scholars throughout history to preserve and internalize knowledge.
  • Study in small portions consistently. Ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) said: "Take knowledge in small amounts at a time so that your hearts can absorb it" (Adab al-Mufrad 142).

Path 2: Purifying the Soul – Tazkiyah and Self-Discipline

Goal: Work on your heart, character, and sincerity through knowledge of purification.

  • Evaluate your actions daily, as Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) said: "Hold yourself accountable before you are held accountable, and weigh your deeds before they are weighed for you" (Ibn Abi Dunya, Muhasabat al-Nafs, 67).
  • Make du’a specifically for purification and sincerity, following the Prophet's ﷺ practice of asking Allah for a heart that is firm upon the truth (Sahih Muslim 2865).
  • Apply what you learn by acting upon even a small deed, as knowledge without action was feared by the Salaf.
