The Spectacular Escape | A True Story By: Burhan Al-Din Sejdi Fili

The Islamic Book Cafe would like to highly recommend The Spectacular Escape, A True Story written by Burhan Ali-Din Sejdi Fili.

We really loved this story because this family showed how we can overcome any difficulty when we remain united, determined, and keep our faith in Allah alone. While reading The Spectacular Escape, I thought of the battle of Badr. The Muslims were in a battle against an army that were twice their number and better fighting equipment.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) was faithful to Allah, trusted in Allah, and remained faithful and obedient to Allah. His (peace be upon him) companions worked with the Prophet (peace be upon him), obeyed, trusted and kept their faith in Allah and his messenger, never waivering. They overcame the enemy just as the family in this book (The Spectacular Escape) overcame the communist regime.

The father in the story reminded me of Abdur Rahman ibn Awf. After the hijrah to Yathrib, one of the Ansar offered him everything he had but Abdur Rahman ibn Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said to just point him towards the market place. He trusted in Allah alone and regained his wealth he had lost. The father (Qazim), after his escape also worked hard in order to provide for his family.

Qazim, his wife Zora, and their six children showed us how a beliving Muslim family can overcome mounting difficulties when remaining firm upon Tawheed as one unit.

About Author

Burhan Al-Din Fili was born in Koplik, Albania, which at the time was under the Communist regime that strangled the country for decades. Young Burhan, however, refused to be cowed by an atheist regime. In 1976 he swam across Lake Shkodra, reaching former Yugoslavia where he was caught, jailed and interrogated. Later, he escaped to Italy where he lived in a refugee camp. In 1977 he moved to the United States, and in 1982 Fili went to Egypt where he studied Arabic and Islamic Studies at the renowned Al-Azhar University. After the collapse of Communism in 1991, he returned to Albania where he contributed to the democratic life of his people. When the regime of Milošević viciously attacked Kosova in 1999, Fili joined Mercy USA, a humanitarian organization, in order to help the refugees there. To this day he contributes to helping the needy in different parts of the world. Fili is married and has four children.
