The Prophet salAllahu alaihi wa salaam trained his Companions radiAllahu anhum to purify their souls. Through various Verses of the Qur’an and the teachings of the Prophet salAllahu alaihi wa salaam, the Companions radiAllahu anhum learned ways to purify their souls, the most important of those ways being as follows:

1) Reflecting on the universe, Allah’s created beings, and the Qur’an itself, so that they can appreciate the Greatness, Almightiness, and Wisdom of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala said: “Indeed your Lord is Allah Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days, then established Himself on the Throne. He makes the day and night overlap in rapid succession. He created the sun, the moon, and the stars—all subjected by His command. The creation and the command belong to Him ˹alone˺.

Blessed is Allah—Lord of all worlds!” (The Clear Qur’an 7:54)

2) Contemplating the fact that Allah’s knowledge is comprehensive of all that exists in the universe, in terms of both the seen and the unseen world.

Contemplation of this sort fills the soul and the heart with an appreciation of Allah’s greatness and purifies the soul from doubts and disbelief.
Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala said: “With Him are the keys of the unseen—no one knows them except Him. And He knows what is in the land and sea. Not even a leaf falls without His knowledge, nor a grain in the darkness of the earth or anything—green or dry—but is ˹written˺ in a perfect Record. He is the One Who calls back your souls by night and knows what you do by day, then revives you daily to complete your appointed term. To Him is your ˹ultimate˺ return, then He will inform you of what you used to do.” (The Clear Qur’an 6: 59, 60)

3) Worshipping Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala

This is one of the most important of ways in which one purifies one’s soul.
Worship is the supreme form of submission, and none deserves to be worshipped but Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, Who said: “And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both is them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honor.” (The Clear Qur’an 17: 23)
