The Journey of the strangers is a book based on the hadith of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him):
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Islam began as a something strange and it will return to being strange, so blessed are the strangers.”Sahih Muslim
From The Back of The Journey of the Strangers
In this age of materialism, consumerism, and extreme liberalism, the Muslim often finds himself at a loss, at odds with the ebb and flow of society, and holding to values, divinely revealed, that contrast starkly with the values held by many around him.
They are looked at askance, accused of being backward, non-conformist, and refusing to integrate. In the face of peer pressure, the resolve of some may weaken, the result being a watering-down of one’s adherence to Islam and the values it calls to.
The Prophet warned us that a time would come when Islam and the Muslims would be beheld as strangers, not just by non-Muslims but by many Muslims as well! He informed us that days were coming in which trying to keep hold of one’s religion would be like holding red hot coals.
He stressed the paramount importance of holding fast to Islam in its pristine purity during that time, stating that this, and only this, was the path to success in this life and the next.
This book is a compilation of two tracts that explain the hadith, ‘Islam began as something strange, and it will return to being strange just as it began, so tuba for the strangers!’ It is hoped that it will be a source of comfort and inspiration for the Muslim striving to follow Islam when the Muslim could feel alienated and alone in the world.
The first is a treatise penned by the great Imam, Al-Ajurri (d.330H), a scholar known for his deep knowledge and piety, his quality being recognized by all.
The second is a monograph written by the Imam, Ibn Rajab Al-Hanbali (d.795H), a scholar praised extensively for his vast knowledge, asceticism, and expertise in the Hanbali school of thought.
An introduction has been added from the words of Shatibi and an appendix from ibn Al-Qayyim’s monumental Madarij al-Salikin.
The Journey of the Strangers Book Details
Benefits of The Journey of the Strangers
The journey of the strangers is a great book for self-reflection. You should know who you are as an individual and be conscious of your direction daily. We know this world is not our goal.
But, it is very easy to get caught up in a world where people chase after their own whims and desires. We can even get confused with the justifications that sound logical when it comes to things that are against Allah’s will.
It is even more difficult when government laws are being passed that supports ways of life that are contrary to the Qur’an and Sunnah. Journey of the strangers offers a detailed explanation of the hadith:
Abu Huraira reported:
The Messenger of Allah, peace, and blessings be upon him, said, “Islam began as a something strange, and it will return to being strange, so blessed are the strangers.”
This book will help you accept the reality of what it is like to be a stranger—a stranger who chooses to be obedient to Allah Ta’alah and what He has sent.
You will be able to relate to the first strangers who had to bear a lot of the burden at the beginning of Islam so we can have this beautiful deen today.
Aspiring to become a stranger, the oath of a stranger, and loving strangeness are a few topics discussed in this book. Your heart will be moved while studying this book.
You should read this book and take it personally. It would help if you studied this book to move in confidence and surety when you are the opposite of the disbelievers.
“If you obeyed most of those on earth, they would misguide you From Allah’s Way”al-An’am pg103
Loneliness As A Stranger
A Discussion Between Allah & Musa
When Musa (alayhis salam) left, fleeing from the people of Pharaoh, he stopped at Madyan in the state in which Allah described him. He was alone, fearful, and hungry. He cried out, ‘My Lord! I am alone, ill, and a stranger!’ He replied, “Musa, the person who is alone is one who does not have Me as a source of solace and comfort. The person who is ill is one who does not have me as his doctor. The person who is strange is one who has no dealings with Me.” (page 103)
How can one feel the bite of loneliness when he is with Allah? Whoever feels the bite of loneliness when alone does so because of his lack of solace with his Lord(pg96).
When we choose to obey Allah despite everyone being against us, we can have comfort in knowing that Allah is pleased with us, Allah is with us, and Allah is protecting us. You should worship Allah as if you see Him. This does not only happen in salat.
Your entire life, everything you do should be for the sake of Allah, and that is worship. Knowing Allah is watching, listening, and acting should be a reminder that Allah is with you. So, loneliness should not be an issue.
This book is for people looking to develop a character contrary to what is acceptable to the world. The Journey of the strangers is a book for people who want to walk in Prophet Muhammad’s footsteps (peace be upon him) and his companions (may Allah be pleased with them).
We believe this book is a great individual study for people who would like to grasp the full meaning of this authentic hadith. This life is not our reality. We are on a journey, and where we end up is determined by the path we choose to take.
